Virtual Reality and Tele-Operation: a Common Framework

چکیده

This paper proposes an overview of a study that conceptually unify the fields of virtual reality and teleoperation, by analyzing the notion of “assistance” to the operator of a virtual reality or tele-operation system. This analysis demonstrates that cases of assistance that are usually considered to belong to virtual reality are not conceptually different from what has been done in tele-operation since long before virtual reality appeared. With this common framework for virtual reality and tele-operation, we hope to provide a theoretical formalization of many ideas acquired empirically, and hence a basis onto which further discussion could be undertaken in a constructive manner.

Quality of Service on a Distributed Virtual Reality System for Robots Tele-operation over the Internet

Virtual Reality applications for tele-operation are the base for nowadays development of virtual laboratories where researchers can share work at distance. Such systems must support a distributed framework to scale and a good Quality of Service (QoS) support to be effective. This paper proposes such a system, where the aim is the teleoperation of robots for complex cooperation tasks between pee...

Remote Operation of Mining Equipment Using Panoramic Display Systems: Exploring the Sense of Presence

The mining industry is interested in tele-operation systems to remove mining operators from hazardous or inconvenient environments while providing them with enough sensory information such that their efficiency is maintained or even enhanced. Similar systems are also used to provide collaboration and assistance in remote problem solving situations, including emergency scenarios. The increased a...

Using Spatialized Sound to Enhance Self - Motion Perception in Virtual Environments and beyond : Auditory and Multi - Modal Contributions

Embodied self-motion illusions (“vection”) have long fascinated both researchers and laypeople. With the increasing quality and affordability of immersive virtual reality (VR) and tele-operation/tele-robotics interfaces, there is also increasing interest in providing compelling sensations of self-motions to create more life-like and convincing experiences [4, 13, 21]. Whereas most research on s...

Global Tele-Immersion: Better Than Being There

The term Tele-Immersion was first used in October 1996 as the title of a workshop the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) organized in Chicago to bring together researchers in distributed computing, collaboration, virtual reality (VR), and networking. Workshop attendees paid specific attention to the future needs of applications in the sciences, ...

SyTroN: Virtual Desk for Collaborative, Tele-operated and Tele-learning System with Real Devices

Tele-training is a main issue nowadays and it is strongly motivated by the increased mobility of people. This mobility shouldn’t be a limit for a good training: pertinence and efficiency have to be the core of distant training environments. In this paper, we introduce SyTroN, a tele-learning system using virtual reality and tele-operation techniques. The first aim is to propose intuitive virtua...
